As the temperatures rise during the summer season, it’s important to consider the impact of warm weather on our beloved scented candles. Higher temperatures can cause pillar candles to melt, warp, or lose their fragrance and container candles – like those we sell at Calon Home – can begin to melt on the surface and lose their fragrance (not too much of an issue if you’re in the house at the time but wasted if you’re out at work or somewhere else!). To ensure the longevity and quality of your candles during warm weather, a little extra care and attention are required. In this blog post, we will explore some essential tips to help you look after your candles and keep them in optimal condition when the heat is on.

Storage: Proper storage is crucial for preserving the integrity of your candles in warm weather. Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, such as a closet or a drawer. Avoid leaving candles in hot areas like windowsills, above radiators or near other heat sources, as excessive heat can cause them to soften or deform. Keeping them in a cool environment will help maintain their shape and prevent melting.

Avoid Sunlight: Sunlight can be detrimental to candles, particularly those made of softer waxes (vegetable waxes such as soy, rapeseed and coconut tend to be softer than paraffin or mineral-blends candles). Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause fading, discolouration, and even deformity. Protect your candles by placing them in shaded areas or using curtains or blinds to block out sunlight during the hottest parts of the day.

Trim the Wick: Trimming the wick is an essential part of candle maintenance regardless of the season. In warm weather, however, it becomes even more crucial. Higher temperatures can cause the wick to become softer, increasing the risk of the flame becoming too large and the candle burning unevenly. Trim the wick to about ¼ inch before each use to promote a steady, controlled burn and to prevent excessive heat.

Time Your Burn: During hot weather, it’s advisable to limit the duration of your candle burn sessions. Extended burning periods can generate more heat, leading to faster melting and potential damage. Opt for shorter burn times, allowing the candle to cool and solidify completely between uses. This practice will help prolong the life of your candle and maintain its original form.

Consider Container Candles: During the warmer summer months, even in the UK, consider using container candles. Container candles are typically made of sturdier materials and have a lower melting point. The container provides an extra layer of protection, preventing wax from spilling or dripping. Additionally, container candles are easier to move and rearrange, allowing you to find the coolest spot in your home.

Freeze for Emergency Measures: If you notice your candle starting to soften or warp due to the heat, you can try placing it in the freezer for a short period. Freezing the candle can temporarily harden the wax, allowing you to reshape it back to its original form. However, this method should be used as a last resort and only for non-perfumed pillar candles, as freezing may affect the fragrance.

So, with a little care and attention, you can ensure that your candles stay beautiful and functional even during warm weather. Proper storage, avoiding direct sunlight, trimming the wick, timing your burn sessions, considering container candles, and the occasional emergency freezer trick can help maintain the integrity of your candles. By following these tips, you can continue to enjoy the warm ambiance and delightful fragrance of your candles all summer long.
